Original Remi / The care guide
Your hair. Your routine.
A little care goes a long way.
From the first wear to your everyday refresh, thoughtful care helps keep your extensions manageable and your style looking its best. Start with your hair type, then build a routine that works for you.
Know what you’re caring for.
Original Remi offers human hair, synthetic hair, and human hair–synthetic blends. The right routine depends on the specific product, texture, and installation method. Check your packaging and product instructions before washing or styling.
Human hair
Cleanse gently, condition the lengths, and keep heat to a minimum. Being human hair does not mean every product is suitable for bleach, color, or chemical treatments.
Synthetic hair
Use care products intended for synthetic fibers. Do not use hot tools unless the product explicitly allows them; follow its stated temperature limit.
Blended hair
Follow the blend’s own instructions. Human hair content does not make a blend heat-safe or suitable for coloring. If you’re unsure, skip heat and ask us first.
Detangle gently. Work from the ends up.
Separate the hair into manageable sections and support it near the attachment point. Ease out tangles at the ends, then move upward a little at a time. Never pull a brush through resistance or catch it on tape, bonds, wefts, or lace.
For straight styles, use an extension-friendly brush or wide-tooth comb. For waves and curls, start with your fingers and follow the texture’s care directions before using a comb. Vigorous dry brushing can separate the curl pattern and create frizz.
Pay attention to the nape and the area around attachments, where friction and missed tangles can build up. Keep product use light; more product does not always mean more moisture.
A gentle wash. A thorough rinse.
Wash according to your product’s directions and your stylist’s advice. Activity level, buildup, fiber type, and installation all matter—there isn’t one schedule for every style.
- Detangle first. Work through knots carefully before wetting the hair.
- Cleanse in one direction. For suitable human hair products, use lukewarm water and a mild, sulfate-free shampoo. Smooth through the lengths rather than scrubbing or piling the hair on top of your head. For synthetic and blended styles, follow the package’s washing directions.
- Condition where it counts. On human hair, focus conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. Keep oils, rich conditioners, and masks away from tape and bonded attachment areas. Use fiber-appropriate products for synthetic hair and blends.
- Rinse completely. Remove residue without rubbing or twisting the hair.
- Blot, then dry. Gently press out excess water with a soft towel. Dry the scalp, base, and attachment areas thoroughly using a method approved for your product and installation.
Keep the movement. Ease up on the handling.
Straight & yaki
Gently smooth and detangle the lengths. Use lightweight products sparingly so the hair keeps its movement. Yaki describes a texture, so check the fiber type before reaching for hot tools.
Waves & curls
Separate gently with your fingers. For human hair textures that allow it, lightly dampen the lengths and use a small amount of compatible leave-in conditioner to refresh. Let the pattern settle without repeatedly brushing or touching it.
Braids, crochet & loose boho pieces
Handle loose lengths separately from the braided base. Gently separate strands before they knot together, avoid heavy buildup, and follow the fiber-specific washing directions. Dry the base thoroughly after cleansing. Ask your stylist for help with persistent tangles instead of pulling on the braid or cutting close to your own hair.
Less heat. More consideration.
When your human hair product permits heat styling, apply a suitable heat protectant and use the lowest effective setting. Use flat irons and curling irons only on fully dry hair, limit repeated passes, and keep heat away from tape, bonds, and lace adhesives.
Synthetic or blended hair? Do not assume it can take heat. Use hot tools only when the product’s instructions explicitly permit them. Heat protectant does not make a fiber heat-safe.
We do not recommend dye, toner, bleach, perms, keratin treatments, or chemical straightening on your extensions. These processes can damage the hair or alter its texture. Contact us about your exact product before considering any chemical service.
Make nighttime part of the routine.
- Gently detangle and make sure the hair and base are completely dry.
- For installed styles, secure the lengths loosely in a way your stylist recommends. Avoid tension at the roots and attachment points.
- Use a satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase to help reduce friction.
- Remove clip-ins before sleeping. Store clean, fully dry pieces neatly in a cool, dry place without crushing the attachments.
Swimming & workouts
Ask your stylist whether swimming is appropriate for your installation. Salt, chlorine, sweat, and friction can affect the hair and attachments. When swimming is permitted, wet suitable human hair with fresh water first, keep the lengths loosely controlled, and avoid tight buns or braids in the water. Rinse promptly afterward and follow your wash-and-dry routine. Do not leave the base damp after a workout.
A few things worth knowing.
How often should I wash my extensions?
Follow the product directions and your stylist’s advice. Cleanse when needed for your scalp and buildup; avoid forcing every fiber and installation into the same schedule.
Can I use oil on my extensions?
If your product allows it, use a small amount on the lengths or ends. Keep it away from tape, bonds, and adhesives. Heavy layering can leave hair coated and encourage buildup.
Why are my extensions tangling?
Friction, buildup, dryness, and missed detangling can contribute. Check the nape and attachment areas, handle the hair gently, and ask your stylist to assess persistent matting. Adding more oil or heat may not solve the cause.
Can I straighten synthetic or blended hair?
Only if the exact product is explicitly approved for heat styling, and only within its stated temperature limit. If you cannot confirm that, do not apply heat.
What should I do if the hair keeps matting or shedding?
Stop forceful brushing and additional chemical or heat treatments. Contact your stylist and Original Remi with the product name, order details, photos, and the care products you’ve used so we can help assess the issue.
